>I am looking for the Payton family of Massey and Blind River, ALGOMA district. This is what I have. Charles Payton b. 14-09-1893, Albert Payton b. 08-02-1888, Henry Payton b. 05-02-1893. all in Massey Ontario to the parents of James Payton and Marie Louise (Mary) Bisson.

Henry Payton was living in Blind River in 1913. Charles and Albert both crossed into the U.S. at Sault Saint Marie to visit their mother Marie Louise (Mary) Payton. She was living in the Detroit area at this time.

Marie and James also had the following children, James who died in 1918 in France, Mary Blanche Louella b. 1896, Elda Marie b. 1900, George b. 1908 and Kenneth b. 1911. James senior died in 1910 in Sudbury and is buried in Sudbury.

Any help with this family is greatly appreciated.

I am researching the PAYTON Family from Canada and Michigan. The PAYTON Family names I am researching are James PAYTON b. ca 1851 Canada and his wife Marie (Mary) Louise BISSON b. 1869 New York. They married 1885 and had eight children, James b.1886, Albert b.1888, Charles b.1890, Henry b.1893, Mary Blanche b.1896, Ellda P. b.1900, George E. b.1908, Kenneth L. b.1911. James died 1910 in Canada and Marie came to Detroit Michigan about 1911-1984 with her four youngest children. I am researching the eldest four children. I know James, the eldest son died 1918 in France and I know where he is buried and who he married and I have also had contact with his daughter-in-law and grandson. I also have pictures of the cemetery and the cemetery marker.I am still looking to verify info about the other three older brothers. I have proof regarding James, Sr. birth, parents, siblings and grandparents. I also have proof of the four younger children who were all born in Canada and all died in Detroit area between 1934 and 1984 and who they married and their children.
There seems to be some question as to the above names and when and where they were born and whether they were Native American and French. Also there seems to be some discussion as to how they were forced to change their names, and where the children were born. So I am trying to correct all of the misinformation that has been submitted by Lori Luttman Slack Harrell

James Payton b. Quebec ca 1853 and Marie Bisson daughter of Horace and Philomene Bisson b. March 24, 1869, Franklin Co., New York. married ca 1885 and had the following children all born in Massey,. Sudbury Co., Ontario, Canada:

James b. 02-29-1886 died in France November 1918 and is buried in Scotland. Albert James b.02-08 1888, Charles D. b. 09-14-1890, Henry b. 05-02-1892, Mary Blanche b. 02-02-1896- d 1936 in Detroit, Ellda Philomene Marie b. 05-29-1900-d 1984, George Exavier (notice that his middle name starts with E not X) b. 0-8-11-1908-d 1971, and Kenneth b. 02-19-1911-d 1934

Maries parents were of French descent, her father being born in New York and her mother being born in Quebec. The Bisson Family leased land from the Mohawk Nation in Franklin Co., New York. They then migrated to Canada where the parents of Horace lived out their days in Essex Co, Ontario, Horace and family moved from Franklin Co.NY, to Renfrew Co., Ontario, to Detroit, MI and Redford Twp., Michigan and then back to Windsor, Ontario and then onto Manitoulin Island for a short stay and they then finally settled in Massey Ontario and both Horace and Phoebe died in Massey, Ontario. They are buried in the Catholic Cemetery there in Massey. The children were all baptised in the Catholic Church there!

James was NOT of Native American descent and Marie was NOT born in Quebec. DNA testing has proved that there is NO Native American blood in the Payton Family even though Lorie refuses to believe it. DNA does not lie! James died July, 11, 1910 in Sudbury, Ontario a few short miles from his home and not because he took a white mans' job. Death Record proves that he wasn't murdered.! At the time of his death, Mary and he were expecting their eighth child. After the birth of Kenneth in 1911, Mary crossed into the United States and settled in Detroit with her four youngest children. She was not forced to change her name because of the supposed Native American blood. She did not live in Iron Mountain, Michigan and then moved onto Livonia Michigan. She and her four younger children after crossing into Michigan from Sault St. Marie settled and remained in the Detroit area. Marie died in 1922-1923 in Detroit of Breast Cancer. Mary Blanche married in 1918 to Wilbert Purdon, Ellda married Rennie Shaw, George Exavier married Irena Starzyk of Detroit. and Kenneth died in 1934 not married. In 1945, George and Irena moved to Livonia, MI with their three children, Robert, Joseph and Clara from Hamtramck, MI.and they had two more children Kenneth and George X.

Although the 1930 Census records states that Ellda and George and Kenneth were all born in Michigan it was not the truth. They only stated this because they didn't want anyone to know where they were really born. They all applied for delayed birth records using towns in the U.P because George had to register for the World War 11 Draft so he could be exempted from military service, instead he worked for Packards to fullfill his military obligation. His two sisters testified to this fact so he would be able to obtain this delayed birth record.

Anyone wishing copies of these records need only to look up the Census Records for Massey, Ontario for 1891 and 1901 and the 1930 Census for Ellda and Kenneth and George. Also the 1920 Census for Mary Blanche (Payton) Purdon. The death records can also be obtained from the Wayne County Clerks office for all of the above except Kenneth who died in Mt Clemens.

Hopefully this puts to rest the misinformation that has been given out regarding this family and the other persons wishing to have the correct info and more may contact me at my private email address.
