I'm still looking for Lochgoilhead, Argyll, McKellar connections, and I have much more information than I did in my posting a few years back.

"My" Donald McKellar was a son of Duncan McKellar and Agnes McGresich (sometimes listed as Agnes Buchanan, apparently a variant or related name to McGresich, MacGreusich, MacGreusaich, and the like. Agnes' parents were Malcolm M'Gresich and Mary McKeol.)

From the birth register of Lochgoilhead, we have birthdates for Donald and his siblings (children of Duncan and Agnes):
Catharine McKellar       1774 -
Archibald McKellar       1776 -
John McKellar       1778 -
Mary McKellar       1780 -
Margaret McKellar       1783 -
Ann McKellar       1794 -
*Donald McKellar        1797 - 1882

*Donald McKellar (1797-1882)
Is listed in the 1842 census for Ontario, Canada, from which we glean:
McKellar, Donald settled Dalhousie on Concession 12 lot 2 in 1829, household of eight.

The 1851 census gives us more than "head-of-household names", listing his wife, Isabella Currie McKellar (born Isobel MacCurrie in 1796, daughter of Neil Currie and Ann White of Strachur, Argyll, Scotland):

McKellar, Donald born-Scot Religion-F/C (Free Church Presbyterian) age 55 married male
McKellar, Isabella born-Scot Religion-F/C age 54 married female
> , Mary born-Canada age 20 single female
> , Duncan born-Canada age 16 single male
> , Isabella born-Canada age 16 single female

We know that Donald and Isabella Currie / MacCurry were married in Lochgoilhead on 23 May, 1826. They had emigrated to Ontario by 1829.

They apparently had a son, Neil McKellar, who had moved out prior to the census. He moved to Hibbert Township in 1855, and married Christena Livingston (or Christine -- a daughter of Alexander Livingston and Mary Currie / MacCurry.)

We also know that Donald's eldest daugter, Agnes McKellar (February 13, 1831- Oct. 8 1921), had married James Gillespie (1819-1895) in 1848, before the 1851 census, and was listed in 1851 with her Gillespie family. They were listed at North Sherbrooke, Lanark County (Ontario) Concession 1 Lot 1&2.

The entire family moved to Hibbert Township, Ontario, in 1856.

Daughter Mary married Hugh Currie, and daughter Isabella married James Park.

Son Duncan (ca. 1835-1920) married Janet Park.

Most of the family is buried in Cromarty Presbyterian Cemetary, Hibbert Township, Ontario, so we have their death dates.

Also, our Gillespie family history notes mention that in 1847 James Gillespie purchased a farm from Duncan McKellar, supposedly a brother of Donald McKellar (1797-1882), when Duncan returned to Scotland. We have no birth record for a Duncan of this generation, brother of Donald, so I'd love to learn more. This farm was either in the Township of Bathurst or of Dalhousie, Lanark Co., Ontario.

I look forward to hearing if this string of information draws out any connections!

  1. Hi there,
I am researching Mackellars in Australia. Our Mackellars started with a Donald too - from Inverarary Scotland.(1818) - After immigrating in 1839 to SA - they made their way to NSW. Strangely they were also near a town called Bathurst in NSW. How very far and wide these Mackellars stretched! Good luck on your search. A Mackellar reunion is being discussed on Facebook - under the Mackellar Clan group.may see u there in 2014.
